About Eyes Off ALX

Eyes Off ALX is a group of Alexandria neighbors volunteering their time and expertise to ensure our city’s technology decisions protect residents’ privacy, security, and rights.

We started when residents with backgrounds in law, technology, and government saw an opportunity for Alexandria to do more to protect its residents’ digital privacy, security, and rights. Our leadership team has testified before Congress on human rights, investigated major technology companies’ privacy practices, and built and sold enterprise technology products, including to local government buyers. The way our city makes decisions about sophisticated technology hasn’t kept pace with established best practices, and we want to help change that.

We bring national privacy experts into conversation with city leaders, show up at community events on technology, AI, and oversight, and engage residents so their input shapes how the city weighs technology’s risks and benefits. We believe good technology policy takes both collaboration and accountability: working together on better approaches, and speaking up clearly when the city falls short of the transparency and oversight residents deserve.

How we’re funded

Eyes Off ALX is entirely self-funded by our members. We have received no money from technology companies, vendors, or political groups, so our only interest is what’s best for Alexandria residents.
